Latest news from the Transport Research Knowledge Centre

Dear readers,

We are back with the latest news about the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC). The TRKC is a free database featuring up-to-date information on European transport research activities. It enables policy makers, researchers and other stakeholders to access results of EU or nationally financed transport research in the European Research Area (ERA).

In this bulletin, we report on the following issues:

New Policy Brochures: Freight Logistics and Passenger Transport

New Policy Brochures: Freight Logistics and Passenger Transport

The TRKC has published two new Policy Brochures. These concise studies help you to discover how transport research is contributing to policy-making and transport operations, illustrated by examples of particular achievements.

The first one deals with the road "Towards an Integrated Transport System" – with a special focus on Freight and Logistics. Major issues which are of interest to both freight and passenger transport are examined, such as the development of the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T), with the attendant European traffic management and information systems on the networks of the various modes.

The second on discusses "User-Friendly and Secure Passenger Transport". Policy and research aim to make passenger transport more attractive to users, as well as safer and more secure. This brochure presents recent policy issues and related research in these areas, with the exception of safety. This has been done because safety is a major topic in itself and closely related to other factors such as traffic management, vehicle technology, legislation, training and enforcement.

Both brochures can be downloaded in the Policy Publications section of the TRKC website.

New Thematic Research Summary on Infrastructure Provision (including TEN-T)

New Thematic Research Summary on Infrastructure Provision (including TEN-T)

This study aims to provide the reader with a synthesis of available results from completed EU-funded research projects related to Infrastructure Provision. Research reported deals with the construction and maintenance of road and rail infrastructure, the development of the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T), the Galileo satellite infrastructure.

This new TRS helps the reader keep abreast of the latest research in the EU on the topic. The first part includes a brief overview of the scope of the theme and summarises the main policy developments at EU level relevant to the theme. The second part contains a synthesis of the main findings and policy implications from research projects and identifies the implications for further research.

The new TRS is available for download from the Thematic publications section of the TRKC website.

TRKC workshop on transport research information at TRA 2010

The Transport Research Knowledge Centre will be present at the Transport Research Arena 2010 event in Brussels with a workshop on 'Accessing transport research information'. The workshop, to be held from 13:45 to 15:00 on Wednesday 9 June, will be chaired by Professor Anthony May of the Institute for Transport Studies, Leeds University, UK. The aim is to present and analyse a range of portals and online resources for transport research and identify complementarities, synergies and potential improvements.

Jointly organised by the European Commission, the Conference of European Directors of Roads, and the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council, the third edition of the European Road Transport Research Arena (TRA) will take place in Brussels from 7 to 10 June 2010. The main theme of TRA 2010 will be 'Sustaining Road Transport Mobility through innovation in Europe'. The aim of this four-day event is to provide stakeholders of transport research and development with a platform to debate innovation for sustainable mobility in Europe, leading to a greener, safer and smarter transport system.
