Background & policy context: 

For implementing its policy goals, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Preservation, Construction and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) requires scientifically well founded decision support and advice. For this purpose BMUB annually issues its Department Research Programme.

Strategic Objectives: 

The strategic objectives of the annual programme are closely related to the prevailing policy objectives of BMUB and its subsidiary entities. These include:

  • Environmental protection
  • Nature preservation
  • Nuclear safety
  • Urban development and housing, and the
  • Future of construction

The calls for tenders, participation or interest are issued by the subsidiary bodies of BMUB or, in exceptional cases, by BMUB directly via their websites. Subsidiary bodies are:

  • Federal Agency for Nature Preservation (BfN)
  • Federal Agency for Nuclear Safety (BfS), and
  • Federal Agency for Building, Urban, and Spatial Development (BBSR)

In 2016 around 350 projects were issues by the Environmental Research Programme across all strategic topic areas. Out of these, the topic area “Clean Air / Environmentally Friendly Technology / Sustainable Mobility / Noise Protection” contains 9 project outlines, which belong to the transportation sector.

  • Discussion about Post-2020-law for CO2 emission reduction in road transport
  • Environmental assessment of transportation modes
  • Concept of funding by users in transport infrastructure under consideration of environmental protection
  • Implementation of the climate protection programm 2020 and development of the climate protection plan 2050 for the transportation sector
  • Impact of an airport on air pollution (fine dust, soot and nitrogen oxides)
