Traffic conditions have to be studied on a regional scale, where in most cases inter- and intra-urban networks function as one coherent system. However, traffic analysis as well as control generally only consider parts of these coherent networks, often leading to misinterpretation of observations and traffic conditions, such as the case of the maintenance on the A10-W.
The research proposal Advanced Multi-Agent Control and Information for Integrated Multi-class Traffic Networks focuses on the integral approach to hybrid traffic networks, and is aimed at gaining better understanding of interrelationships of network components, consistent traffic information, and control, considering the varying reactions of different network users, categorised in terms of societal, economic, or operational characteristics.
Sub-projects 1-5 are PhD projects, while the integration case study 6 provides job opportunities for a Post-Doc researcher. Altogether, in this project not only look are technical aspects looked at (modelling and control design) of the traffic system, but also behavioural, societal and economic aspects are taken into account. There is an explicit connection between the research results of projects 1 to 4 (in terms of providing consistent anticipatory information and guidance, establishing predictive optimal control strategies, etc.). As such, the proposed approach is multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary, which is also evidenced by the composition of the participating groups.
Within this NWO-Connekt programme, five sub-programmes have been defined. This is one of them.
Each sub-programme consists of multiple Ph.D. projects, each with an own project leader (usually a Thesis Supervisor). All sub-programmes are coordinated by a program-leader (in this case: Prof. Dr. ir. S.P. Hoogendoorn, TUD), the overall programme will be coordinated by Connekt.
The NWO-Connekt research programme is a truly interdisciplinary programme. The Ph.D. positions will therefore be created at different universities and institutes. Part of the research will be conducted by Ph.D.'s that will work with universities and institutions participating in TRAIL.
